Blue Wednesday

Blue Wednesday, the rest is elsewhere, or the terrible vacuousness of a mental monologue

I am going to try to speak about the work rather than about me; however, as the title does not indicate, you will have to endure the almighty assaults of an undaunting subjectivity. Before diving into the troubled waters of an awkward presentation not by offering you a nautical ballet but some insights into the reasons that guide me or lead me astray when it comes to art, allow me to put my flippers on with the following citation:

"To be honest, I have never chosen a subject for a film. I allowed the idea to enter my mind, grow and develop, I took plenty of notes whenever I felt invaded: charge!... It is a way of working based on progression invasion rather than choice or adoption."
Excerpt from the letters of François Truffaud.

In my case, the progressive invasion has lasted for 35 years, which doesn't keep me from being a fervent adept of intellectual laziness and useless contemplation. I take pleasure in understanding the things inherent to my life as an artist and life in general in an approximate way.

This allows me to advance through concentric circles, feeling my way towards an opaque shifting vanishing point. I often feel as though I go from one idea to the next, picking up on a medium without fully using it. But why in fact should I legitimate the present moment by freezing it in a creative process so calibrated that it appears as nothing more than yet another artistic affirmation in a world which spews up sense and non-sense without pause.

Isn't zero gravity in galactic darkness more exciting than a ride o a carousel, leaving you with the aftertaste of frustration combined with a certain desire to render things post-popcornian? No doubt about it, I'm only good for one thing in general and that's global remixing, the experimental synthesis of ideas, shapes, colors and sounds in real time with an occasional improvised recording session on the side, stored immediately afterwards and classified to be exhumed at the right moment, when an attempt at creation presents itself.

As time goes by, the projects more or less successfully realized form a landscape that can be understood differently according to the angle from which one looks at them and the season.

Seen from above I might also resemble a character playing airplane alone, arms outstretched, mouth wide-open, eyes popping out of my skull, humming an electro-bucolic refrain that everyone just as soon forgets. Sure, an airplane isn't the best way to keep your feet on the ground but why march straight in a direction that inevitably leads to the same exit as your next door neighbor?

I hope you understand that my wish isn't so much to envision my work in its entirety.
For the time being that doesn't interest me and the less I know the more I make without having the feeling of making while telling myself all the while that I'm doing something terribly important but that I don't understand. I don't like to work, I'm easily bored.

As a result I end up with a varied, fragile, more or less accomplished production, fabricated in pain that I can't quite figure out. Nihilism, I call your name.

I am literally overcome by growing doubts on the progress and pertinence of the artistic path I've been on the last few years. One thing however is certain, that it's impossible for me to stop trying to continuously redefine the boundaries of my mental universe by sewing, drawing, collage, writing, wall-drawing, painting, video, music, action or performance. I am trying to construct a vocabulary of objects, forms, images and sounds or attitudes able to communicate my emotional state of the moment, the understanding I have of myself at the time I think about and do things.

In fact, it's none other than pure subjectivity that animates me when i snare an idea that I try to customize to make it compatible with a stable of flimsy metaphors, spicy tales, or naive images.

Already at this stage of representation, the first meaning that can emanate from my work ( this meaning I'm incapable of naming, this semantic matrix, this plastic soul born of an unknown mother appears only afterwards, and the rare, precious, euphoric dimension I feel when I experience a new idea is no longer but a distant echo. Only one solution remains to establish an interface between my mind and the outside world. It's the IF or "it seems like".
To illustrate my point I'm going to read a text I wrote 2 years ago under the pseudonym of Toshiro Bishoko whose title is:

Gloglo meets the nudists of self-fiction or the need to appreciate a tragic moment for a better understanding of the presentv

Some inhabitants of Los Angeles didn't send me a video cassette but as N.R. suggested, I won't go see the Cure concert tomorrow because I wish to shit upon the old new wave that boils inside me like some crap caught in Vietnam in 1972 (I was 6 but knew nothing yet about pure opium).

It's oh so cool to let oneself be influenced by a person deliberately selected for his ability to fall asleep at the table, save for the fact that I myself have never slept at the table, I did however dream of killing my father who made so much noise while eating...frankly, I'd have prefered him to be American.

That way, I'd also have been American, had a super skateboard, a dolphin , and lots of friends.

I would have been a respected gang leader because I'd have been cooler than all the other dudes my age. What's more, I'd have had a load of older pals to take me on secret trips to Woodstock where I'd have smoked joints, dropped acid, and beaten the world record for the youngest overdose (luckily a too cool doctor would have saved me without saying a word to the cops, meaning my parents would have remained in the dark, that way at 8 and a half, I'd have learned that I'd come into this world to do drugs but I'd have waited nonetheless for my communion before doing heroin. At 18, my best friend John was found dead in the high school toilets from one fucking overdose.

You should have seen the crowd at the funeral ! I was wearing my new jeans with the tiger heads embroidered onto the back pockets and I'd managed to avoid the barber so my hair was really long, so cool, I looked like a girl with a big nose, and I liked that. That gave an intelligent look. However, just after john's burial, I also wanted to end it all to have plenty of people cry on my grave, so I bought 3 grams of white from some blacks in Harlem ( after shaking a police patrol on foot that wanted to take me back to my father, a real mafioso business man -whom I was secretely in love with - but who didn't really give a fuck about me).

After leaving the dealers who begged me not to do anything stupid, I borrowed a needle from a totally imploded junkie in order to give myself the biggest shot of my life when some dude suddenly turned up to sign me for a film on rebel youth. I would have played Skunk, the hero who had tons of problems with the authorities (there were lots of scenes with me running, always dressed to the hilt in top destroy style) but who became a rockstar at the end of the story. After, he met the Chancellor Helmut S. during a spring shower in a London park, and had a romantic love affair with him during the winter.

I was okay to play in the film, ‘cause I was really fed up with going to school, so boring, and brimming with asshole teachers and lame things to learn. Anyway, I was always bad at school and I know damn well that I'll never get my diploma...what's more nobody loves me so I listen to new-wave of the Cure, Dépèche Mode, ou X-Small Deutschland kind.

I hope nobody realized I was stupid, but whatever, anyway I'm going to die soon...I think suicide or madness are the only 2 solutions. Otherwise later on, I'll certainly be somebody famous. In the meantime I'm not allowed to go see the Cure in Athens but one day I'll get my revenge, and I'll kiss the singer from Marilyn Manson on the mouth. We'll be on television and my parents will die of sorrow when they see the scene at home on their boob-tube. I'll wear dark glasses to their funeral, but people will see tears running under the tinted lenses (maybe too much Candy Flip or Special K). Brian, the singer form M.M. will wait in the limousine near the cemetery. After, we'll just head back to L.A.
